I’m Going to Do Today

…What others are unwilling to do, so I can do something tomorrow, that others can’t.

Mat Fraser, 5 times CrossFit Champion

I love this mantra. Simple, yet with many layers to it. I first heard this line watching the Mat Fraser Documentary a few weeks back and have found it popping up in my mind ever since. It resonates so strongly with me, I’m not even sure why.

Originally a quote from Jerry Rice, an American Football player with the San Francisco 49ers but features as the opening line in the Mat Fraser documentary.

For me, it tends to show up during exercise mostly, but also during writing blocks and other tasks. It spurs me on to keep going, trust the process and focus on the task at hand, to its full completion. Obviously in Fraser’s case, it was all about fitness training and competition but the same mindset can be applied to any facet of life – sport, love, business, family, finances, relationships.

Imagine you want to lose weight. It’s January, this one is fairly high up the list for a lot of people. Today is Sunday. If you want to lose weight in the next week, being organized and in control of your food consumption is key. Being ready for the week ahead with prepared meals, will help you eat well, hit your targets and avoid poor decisions due to hunger catching you out. So while most people will use Sunday to unwind and relax, you could take a few hours out, plan out your meals for the week ahead, do a grocery shop inline with that plan and batch cook a few meals to grab and go during the work week.

So by doing today (plan, prep, cook) what others are unwilling to do, allows you to eat well and hit your health targets tomorrow, while others have to wing it and hope for the best. Your chances of success are greatly improved if you put in the work today for the pay off in the future. It may not be tomorrow, or even the next day, but the results will follow if your execution is consistent and you keep showing up.

So let’s get going. What can you do today that will help you be better tomorrow?

Yours in health and happiness,

JP
